The long wait is over, Dragon Ball Super's manga is here and boy does it cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. It manages to cover Battle of God's, briefly go over the resurrection of Freeza and even start the tournament between universe 6 and 7. But despite covering that much the pacing doesn't feel super rushed.

Though the manga wasn't drawn by Toriyama, Toyotaro the new artist does a great job of giving the series the classic Dragon Ball look and feel. It's also fun that manga manages to add additional details to the anime's events. In short this is a must read for fans of Dragon Ball.

For those unfamiliar with the Dragon Ball series, Super might not be the best starting point as it expects you to be familiar with Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Also a note for anime only watchers of the series you will notice that some names of characters are different, so that might take a little getting use to.

Never once did I think I'd start reading Dragon Ball comics again. But after the new "Super" show started up in the past years, I figured I give this new series a shot. After seeing the last two movies, I never knew what Toriyama had coming next. So I wanted to try and revive my memories of Dragon Ball, while starting new memories with this next series. While it left out the movie where Frieza comes back, I think the book still delivered greatly. It just felt good to start following Toriyamas greatest work once again, and I cant wait for volume two this holiday season.
Shipping was super quick! Overall story is great even though it can feel a little rushed at some parts. It deviates from the animie here and there but I personally enjoy those differences in approach/solution/presentation of certain scenarios.
Can't wait for the next one to come out )
Would recommend this to any Dragon Ball fan

This book picks up where Dragon Ball Z leaves off. After fast forwarding through the Battle of God's saga and completely skipping Resurrection 'F, volume 1 focuses on the start of the tournament between universe 6 and 7.

Although the Manga and Anime differ (some scenes are altered or completely omitted) you'll find this easy to read and follow. Overall this is a great start for anyone who hasn't already seen the 1st part of the series.

Chapter 6 is a treat as it isn't featured in the anime. The bonus 1 shot at the end of chapter 9 was a great addition as well.

Hopefully this is a great start for an even greater series
Let me start by saying that the quality of the print is very nice. Nice thick paper and solid feeling over all. Much more so than the DB 3-in-1 releases. From a physical standpoint it’s got no real downsides.

The big thing keeping this from a 5 star is that the text seems to vary in size. Some panels are frustratingly small like in the pic I attached. I have very good eyesight and I have to strain a bit to read some panels.

This one is minor, but as a purist it bothers me. Viz still calls Mr Satan “Hercule” and I can’t stand it. Nobody buying this release is going to be offended by the fact that his family’s names are all puns on Devil. Viz keeps many character and attack names intact even go so far as to exclusively call Tenshinhan’s Blinding Attack “Taiyo-ken” And always putting a blurb beneath the panel explaining what it means. The name Hercule is stupid sounding, and it’s a bit of censorship that will not die out. This isn’t 2003.
The Dragon Ball Super anime series let us see again our favorite characters from the Dragon Ball Franchise. A new story, new challengers and enemies. If you followed the anime through crunchyroll or Funimation you know that it was really good. Now we have here the same story but it is told in a different way.

Let me explain it for you. Akira Toriyama the creator of Dragon Ball is helping producing the new material, but he just gives some ideas or some story line material to the anime producers and the mangaka for this version (Toyotaro) to interpert. Then, the anime producers and mangaka make their own interpretation of the story and that is why you may have some slightly differences between the anime and manga. The producers have their versions and Toyotaro them. One is not better than the one, and both are really good. The manga has a wonderful art almost as good as Toriyama. So you can know that you are gonna enjoy this manga even if you already watched the anime.
I'd been looking forward to this since the anime started airing in 2015. It feels very fast paced and its a nice continuation from where Z ended with the defeat of Buu.

First off, this 1 volume covers a lot of ground, very quickly. It assumes you've either seen the movies or watched the anime since those came first. In the Z mangas, arcs like the namek/frieza arc and the androids/cell arc would span multiple chapters and volumes. That made it feel like the story progressed naturally without it going too fast. You wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next. In this volume alone, it covers the Battle of Gods arc in about 3 chapters, and basically goes over the Resurrection F arc in literally 3-4 panels... and then goes straight to the Universe 6 arc

It covers all that ground a little too fast for my taste. I get it that the anime came first, but those arcs at least spanned 13+ episodes each. That could have been recreated with great artwork across at least 2-3 volumes, but instead either rushes it or glosses over it. I'm not sure if this was Toriyama's idea or the artist didn't want to do all that work, but I'm hoping the remainder of the Universe 6 arc, the Future Trunks arc and Universe survival arc are spanned out with more care and not just glossed over so we can get great fight art

Despite my complaints its still great to have a canon continuation to the end of Z. The art is great, very faithful to Toriyama's original work. There's some entertaining dialogue evocative of Toriyama's spark when he was writing Z, and overall, its still a great first volume to have on the shelf. Can't wait for the second volume to sit there next to my first on the shelf
